International REU Program in Smart Structures.
Today is Wednesday May 16, 2012.
Welcome to the International REU Program in Smart Structures web page.
This program provides undergraduate researchers with an international experience in Korea applying advanced technologies to structural engineering challenges. Students participate in symposia, conduct research on real projects in structural health monitoring and structural control, and learn and experience a foreign culture. The formal portion of this program consists of a 10 week summer program supporting six undergraduate researchers and one graduate student, consisting of four weeks here in the US at the University of South Carolina, University of Connecticut and University of Akron, and six weeks in South Korea at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST).
This is an exciting research experience for undergraduate students with the following objectives:
- establish a Smart Structures collaboratory using state-of-the-art cyberinfrastructure and teleoperation and tele-presence technologies; and
- prepare undergraduate students for a global marketplace and the increasingly competitive world of engineering and research by fostering their critical thinking skills, expanding their core knowledge about Smart Structures and providing meaningful research experiences.
Secondary objectives are to :
- increase students' appreciation for other cultures;
- enhance students' technical and writing abilities; and
- strengthen current research and educational collaboration between the US and South Korea
International Collaboration
Part of the research will be performed at the Korean Advanced Institute of Science and Technology (KAIST) for six weeks. As part of the trip participants will get an opportunity to learn about Korean culture and international research cooperation.
Eligibility
Completed sophomore or junior year, majoring in a field related to Smart Structures such as Civil Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Computer Science, Mechanical Engineering, etc. Applicants from underrepresented groups are strongly encouraged to apply. This program is restricted to U.S. citizens or legal residents.
Deadline
The deadline to apply for the 2012 program is February 15, 2012.
Participant Support
In support of these activities, the program will provide the student participants with the following:
- round-trip airfare between the US and Korea
- living expenses in Korea (housing and food)
- generous stipend for summer period (10 weeks)
